Today’s world gives the impression that it is constantly on the verge of another development – indeed, it even temporarily seems to be on the verge of chaos. In such a world, companies must also constantly be prepared to take even such leaps forward – and even temporarily to completely break with their own past. A look at the university textbooks and at the practices of management professionals reveals that this is not always the case.It would be worth having a contrary impression: although in a new era of a global and digital economy entirely new challenges face leadership, it is still guided by the knowledge and skills of a past century. A transformation of leadership knowledge and skills has only taken place partially; there is still no holistic, theoretically grounded and practically tested concept of future-ready leadership.
Future-oriented leadership puts the question at the center: how are leaders able to successfully shape the future of their company? Future-oriented leadership is not an abstract, closed leadership model. Rather, it is a method that takes existing models and insights from leadership and applies them, while simultaneously promoting their application through concrete implementation steps. Future-oriented leadership is itself part of the change process; it thrives on change and development in response to the challenges in different situations or organizations.
The authors have succeeded in capturing these aspects in a theory of future-oriented leadership in the discussion with the previously known models of leadership and in developing an independent method (the Future Leadership Program) for practical application.
