Against the backdrop of the current political, economic, and military situation, it becomes clear what was seriously lacking in the recent past – a lack of strategic thinking. The key to a successful strategy for Europe is innovation. The pressure of the current crises should be used to accelerate the transition to sustainable innovations. This is how the real big human problem – the global environmental and climate crisis – is to be solved.
However, it must not be based on a single solution; instead, the entire technological potential must be bundled into an innovation portfolio. To do this, the advantages and disadvantages of, for example, solar and wind energy, hydropower, hydrogen, nuclear and fusion energy must be weighed against each other and interconnected in a „hybrid“ energy system in order to align the European innovation portfolio towards a sustainable future.
As in the energy sector, in the digital transformation and artificial intelligence no single solution can be relied upon; rather, the entire technological potential must be bundled into an innovation portfolio to be energy-efficient and sustainable. In the competition among value systems, Europe should stand out for its democratic legal certainty.
